Abstract

COVID-19 has affected Muslims in various ways: from initial social isolation policies to anticipating and experiencing Ramadan without community, the effects of COVID-19 on Muslim mental health, coping behaviors, religiosity, and philanthropy varied widely among Muslims. Through four large-scale surveys captured from mid-March to early July 2020, we describe and predict the beliefs and behaviors of thousands of Muslims (nearly 9,000 across four surveys) at different stages at the start of the pandemic. Using cutting-edge statistical techniques (e.g., structural equation modeling, cluster analyses) to analyze quantitative data, in addition to utilizing rich open-ended qualitative data, we share our findings on the diverse ways Muslims have experienced the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, we investigate mental health, changes in religiosity, theological beliefs related to COVID-19, changes in family dynamics, and Ramadan experiences, among other factors. Our findings explain the diverse opinions that Muslims have about COVID-19 theologically, their concerns about social distancing, attitudes toward closing the masjid during the pandemic, associations between psychological characteristics (e.g., gratitude and uncertainty intolerance) and religiosity on mental health, the overwhelming optimism toward Ramadan, the religious experience of Ramadan in social isolation, the correlates of thriving marriages in social isolation, and the demographic, psychological, and religious factors that influence philanthropic attitudes and behaviors during the pandemic in Ramadan. The chapter will focus on core psychological and religious processes that permeate through the lives of Muslims to influence the way COVID-19 has been lived and experienced.
