Abstract

A public health crisis as extensive as COVID-19 goes beyond normative standards. This pandemic calls for a multidisciplinary approach to address societal issues and prompts communities to organize themselves. Muslims are a minority in the United States, however, many Muslims are frontline health workers, essential workers, lawyers, public health officials, and teachers confronting COVID-19. The intersections of religion, social justice, law, public health, and healthcare became immediately obvious, and the numerous needs of both Muslims and non-Muslims in society were quickly revealed in the early stages of the pandemic. This, then, was the premise for creating the “Policy Committee of the National Muslim Task Force for COVID-19,” which provided an advocacy platform that streamlined efforts in promoting policies related to public health, healthcare, family and social welfare, and financial equity during the crisis. The committee impacted local/national communities through advocacy for COVID-19-related policy issues related to viral contacts/spread, PPE production, food insecurity, and health education. This chapter outlines the committee’s policy framework grounded in Islamic values, as well as the work it has accomplished.
