Abstract

This chapter recounts the process of commissioning, negotiating and composing an orchestral score to a BBC radio drama adaptation of John Wyndhamâs The Kraken Wakes. It explores the different types of representation used in music for audio drama, informed by film music theory. The performance and live recording of the project, viewed from a historical perspective, evokes the Golden Age of radio, while the size of the orchestra and composition methods recall the film music of the 1950s. The collaboration process resulted in a hybridised artistic product, straddling the boundaries between live event, radio drama and film score.
