Abstract

Through the lens of musicology, this chapter provides a much needed historical context and critical analysis of Norman Corwinâs understudied and most significant early radio play, They Fly through the Air with the Greatest of Ease (1939), an acerbic rebuttal of fascist militarism that also ironically echoes avant-garde Italian Futurist musical ideas. This chapter further contributes and exemplifies a practical and repeatable three-pronged musicological approach to radio play analysis which (1) isolates overt music for analysis, (2) treats the entire piece as a work of electroacoustic music, and (3) explores key points of potential semantic guidance of musical experience.
