Abstract

The US Federal Theatre Project was established in 1935 as part of President Rooseveltâs âNew Dealâ to alleviate the Great Depression. In addition to experimenting in live theatre, the FTP created a Radio Division to extend its reach nationwide. Its broadcasts in 1937â1938 included two series of âsymphonic dramasâ; for the second, playwrights were commissioned to âinterpretâ classical orchestral works by way of a matching âoriginal dramatisationâ. The choice of pieces and the scenarios attached to them were both timely and topical. They also reveal the importance of radio in fostering various vernacular modernisms in a peculiarly American context.
