Abstract

The global environmental problem can be explained by the fact that the biosphere is subjected to increasing anthropogenic pressure without adequate protective measures. The rate of evolution of the technosphere far exceeds the rate of evolution of the biosphere, and so there is no hope for the adaptation of the biosphere to the growing anthropogenic impact. The concept of “carrying capacity” was introduced to characterize the limits of the biosphere’s resistance to such impacts, and yet a satisfactory quantitative representation has not yet been developed. The present article considers analogs to this concept and puts forward a proposal to consider various “normalizing” global indicators as one-dimensional projections of the carrying capacity of the biosphere: this includes the maximum permissible population size, the acceptable share of human energy consumption in the total energy turnover of the biosphere, and the minimum share of territory occupied by natural ecosystems. This article also considers sustainable development in relation to the concept of carrying capacity, as well as the radically opposed belief, characteristic of the ideology of the consumer society, that environmental degradation can be compensated for with financial resources. Within the idea of sustainable development, at least two more threats to civilization arise: the deterioration of human health and the violation of the social balance. Accordingly, the author proposes an extended definition of the concept of sustainable development based on the ideas put forward in the article and the idea of the limits of the destruction of stabilizing structures.
