Abstract

Post-apartheid South Africa has seen an unequal spread of skillsets and resources which has entrenched the pre-existing divide and hampered equal learning opportunities and education for all. The onset of COVID-19 saw online learning become the mode of delivery for continuing the academic year. However, contextual challenges to information literacy became evident as schools with a deficit of ICT infrastructure were restricted in their ability to participate in e-learning solutions. This chapter uses a theoretical approach to explore the challenges facing educators teaching benchmark information within a multiliterate-based ICT environment in the South African context. By underscoring the role of information literacy as a prerequisite for meta-literacy in an ICT-based teaching and learning environment, this chapter encompasses a desktop review of peer-reviewed literature in the form of academic articles, reports and theses. Framed through critical emancipatory theory, this study first explores 21st-century socio-economic influences impacting effective information literacy within an ICT environment, while further underscoring the need for ongoing teacher development in both subject-specific and generic skillsets which inform the use of ICT systems to convey relevant and meaningful learning experiences. This study points to the need to learn from the impact of COVID-19, especially considering the fourth industrial era challenges which necessitate advanced meta-literacy skillsets that promote contextually relevant and reliable e-learning in a post-truth world.
