Abstract

Within the non-Marxian historical materialism it is possible to distinguish a special form of pre-capitalistic society – state feudalism. According to Leszek Nowak, this socio-economic formation was typical for Russia between 15th and 17th centuries. Meanwhile, similar social structures developed in the Ottoman Empire in its classical period (i.e. 1300–1600), in Latin America under the reign of the Spanish Empire and in State of the Teutonic Order in Eastern Prussia. In the state feudalism, the ruling class combines the disposition of the means of coercion and the means of production. The state which is simultaneously the owner uses political methods in the economic sphere. It also tries to degrade the status of the class of owners. All of the four societies considered conducted an aggressive foreign policy. State feudalism had a chance to develop where the ruling class, after a successful use of aggression, was strong enough to take the control over the economy. In addition, these states were located on the outskirts of European civilization, which enabled them to expand.
