Abstract

The author compares Marxism with liberalism in terms of their programs and cognitive criteria. In the author’s view, Marxism surpasses liberalism with regard to cognitive criteria, but liberalism surpasses Marxism with program criteria. If one preserves two criteria of truth: the criterion of practice and the criterion of explanatory power, one must accept the limited but real cognitive value of both theories. Hence, one needs to correct both Marxism and liberalism. As regards the third postulated theory, it would have to transition into error-free Marxism in one border case and into cleansed liberalism in another case. Such a theory, then, would preserve all the contributions of corrected Marxism and corrected liberalism. In the last part of the paper, the features of such theory are analyzed.
