Abstract

The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the hidden assumptions of the liberal philosophy of history. According to this philosophy, liberal democracy is the natural end of history. The author juxtaposes the liberal philosophy of history with Marxist historiosophy and the vision of the past presupposed by non-Marxian historical materialism, where the prognosis of the totalitarization of capitalism was propounded. The methodological status of this prognosis is considered in the last part of this paper.
