Abstract

This chapter analyses the ways in which world fairs – Paris (1925, 1937) and New York (1939), as well as the one envisaged for Warsaw 1944 – were used in Polish diplomacy. The new Polish state used “cultural propaganda” to strengthen the new borders, deepen its relations with Western Europe and the United States, and improve its contacts with Polish migrants abroad. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs treated the world fairs as an important tool in foreign politics. In each self-presentation, the Polish self-image combined modernizing and traditionalist elements, expressed through architecture, inventions, technology, new media as well as art. References to modernity aimed at presenting the success of the young country, while historical motifs were deployed to underline Poland’s belonging to Western civilization.
