Abstract

Romanian displays at the Parisian world fairs of 1889 and 1900 were not the creation of a single nation-state or a single architect but the outcome of transnational collaborations between French and Romanian architects and organizers. A key debate involved to the choice between folk and prestigious architecture as the best way to represent Romanian culture. If in 1889 the Romanian “traditional” house was more popular with the French public for its picturesque character, some Romanian architects criticized the exoticism of the display. Similarly, the traditional dishes and especially the music of the Roma band of lăutari were highly appreciated but at the same time provided the opportunity for a quick and superficial enjoyment of other’s culture, based on stereotypical perceptions. In 1900 the Romanian pavilion referenced the country’s best-known historical monuments and projected the image of a European nation. As such, it satisfied the expectations of the Romanian organizers, while enjoying less of a public succes.
