Abstract

Chapter 5 takes up the “not possible” resistance in which we can sense the importance and enormity of postcolonializing pastoral care. The global scale of connecting my daily practices to world histories and diverse intercultural memories is daunting and I so often simply fall into a state of overwhelm. Even though global patterns and my daily life are deeply connected from the clothes I wear to the coffee I drink to the neighborhood I live in to my access to a driver’s license or preventative health care. Unable to even interrogate my own daily practices, “not possible” resistances manifest in deeming my ability to make a difference too small or simply impossible. Building on the work of pastoral theologian and mentor Emmanuel Y. Lartey, this chapter argues for a pastoral task of crossing borders of possibility with healthy boundaries. This last chapter raises ethical challenges involved in postcolonializing pastoral practices, in which both honoring healing boundaries and transgressing harmful borders are two crucially concurrent foci in resisting as a pastoral care function.
