Abstract

Chapter 3 takes up the “not now” resistance and advocates for more interculturally inclusive future stories as a task of pastoral care. This chapter brings pastoral theologian Andrew Lester, who coined the term “future stories,” and religious education scholar Anne Streaty Wimberly’s concept of “story-linking” into conversation with complex challenges that make imagining a hopeful future more and less accessible. A disconnected we can acknowledge the work of postcolonializing pastoral care as important, but just not now, just not yet. Some other more pressing matters always seem to come first. “Not now” resistances, like all resistances, take many forms, with “not yet” as a milder expression and “not ever” as an often-underlying foregone conclusion. Rituals of naturalization and deportation in U.S. federal courthouses, as well as search and rescue rituals for missing migrants, illustrate resistances around time. This chapter argues for casting visions of a just future that depends on postcolonial resistance movements.
