Abstract

Chapter 1 takes up the “not me” resistance and advocates moving into belief in intercultural human connection. A group that identifies as we/us with the implicit yet shared assumption that our group is disconnected from a they/them can easily claim that resistance movements are not about us, not our work to do. Institutions of separation such as current incarceration and immigration detention practices illustrate “not me” resistances operating in the United States today. Drawing on the work of womanist theologian Kelly Brown Douglas, legal scholar Michelle Alexander, and feminist psychoanalyst Jessica Benjamin, this chapter argues that human connection grounded in believing and believing in each other is a pastoral care practice of resistance.
