Abstract

An overall picture of Byzantine art in Italy is far from to be broadly accepted and the present paper will not make any attempt to fill the gap. Medieval art in Italy can be outlined as a mosaic of different tendencies, which correspond to the mosaic of different people and cultures coexisting in the peninsula. Models from Byzantine art can be recognized only in limited areas along the coast. Five areas and sites are considered as diagnostic cases: Ravenna and the Exarchate; North Italy; Rome; Castelseprio; South Italy.
