The aim of this paper is to analyse the period of the Byzantine control in northern Italy through the physical characteristics of the settlements. The analysis includes the various of typologies of ancient cities: deserted, such as Altino; and others which have survived to the present-day, including Rimini and especially Ravenna, the capital of the Exarchate. The analysis also pays attention to new towns which emerged in this area during the 8th and 9th centuries, including Comacchio and Venice. These are two distinct and particular cases. Venice only became a city during the 9th century, while Comacchio was already a preeminent urban centre in the 8th century. These new settlements also based their success upon trade, as recent excavations in Comacchio have shown. The final part of this paper will be instead devoted to the organization of land property as has been demonstrated thus far by archaeological evidence.
