Abstract

This chapter explores the value of the popular Life Design approach to career planning alongside some of the persuasive critiques made against it. In the context of careers education enacted within International Studies curricula, it explores possibilities for teaching the method and the critique together. Such an approach is shown to enable authentic, contextual learning experiences for students, encompassing both pragmatic and critical approaches to the task of planning a career. Insights drawn from cybernetic thinking, and its considerations of information, feedback, and holism, support the perspective developed. The chapter culminates with reference to the work of the small range of theorists of careers education who look beyond the binary of hegemonic versus critical conceptions of work and career to consider and develop emancipatory approaches and discourses.
