Abstract

Mathematical or numerical literacy emerges as a critical skill as people increasingly encounter numbers and data daily, yet they often struggle to interpret them effectively. In this context, this chapter aims to analyze the curricula of three countries -Hong Kong, Türkiye, and South Africa- that demonstrated different levels of success in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study [TIMSS] 2023 exam regarding numerical literacy. The curricula were analyzed using content analysis, considering the five fundamental components of numeracy: Contexts, mathematical knowledge, tools, dispositions, and critical orientation. The study’s findings suggest that the three countries incorporate the core contexts of numeracy in their learning objectives to varying degrees, with certain components receiving minimal or no attention. Moreover, inconsistencies emerge between the curriculum’s overarching goals and its approach to numeracy. Additionally, the relationship between the extent to which numeracy is integrated and student performance in the TIMSS 2023 exam appears weak. This chapter also examined Artificial Intelligence’s (AI) capabilities to design lesson plans incorporating numerical literacy and mathematical educational values to raise awareness of this issue. The results indicate that AI adapts to predefined frameworks, integrates fundamental numeracy components, and enriches lesson plans with diverse values. This highlights the compatibility of AI-generated lesson plans with modern pedagogical perspectives and underscores their essential role in values-based mathematics education.
