Abstract

Although there has been a rise in research on artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in teacher education (e.g. Huang et al., 2024; Lee & Yeo, 2022; Lee et al., 2025; Liu et al., 2023; Song et al., 2022; Wang et al., 2024), few studies have explored their application within early childhood education, particularly in fostering professional written communication skills among preservice teachers. This chapter addresses this gap by exploring how AI chatbots can support Australian early childhood preservice teachers many from international backgrounds â in building confidence and capacity in their communication with families and colleagues. Adopting an autoethnographic approach, the chapter reflects on the experiences of teacher educators in identifying the unique challenges faced by early childhood preservice teachers when engaging in professional communication. It outlines the process of innovating and developing AI chatbots for use within a postgraduate initial teacher education program, employing a design thinking framework. The chapter explores the dual role of these chatbots as both an engagement tool and a bridge between pedagogy and practice, contributing to a broader understanding of how emerging technologies can address the cognitive and affective dimensions of initial teacher education. The discussion also considers the implications of using AI technologies to reimagine teacher preparation in culturally diverse learning contexts.
