Abstract

This chapter examines how integrating design thinking into science education can enhance girls’ engagement and learning outcomes. The 3S (See It, Say It, Sort It) Project – developed for Secondary-one science teachers at a girls’ school in Hong Kong – emphasizes active participation and collaborative problem-solving. Through this approach, students visualize scientific concepts using Venn diagrams, articulate their reasoning, and systematically organize information. By applying the principles of design thinking, teachers can create dynamic learning environments that foster curiosity and critical thinking, helping to bridge the gender gap often seen in STEM. The study presents practical implementation strategies, including interactive experiments, structured group discussions, and real-world task designs tailored to girls’ interests. Grounded in empathy and user-centred design, this method not only encourages girls to take ownership of their learning but also builds a classroom culture that values diverse perspectives. Findings indicate that teachers’ implementation of design thinking, particularly through the use of Venn diagrams, influence student engagement in the science classroom environment. Ultimately, this chapter argues for design thinking as a transformative pedagogical tool – one that can inspire future generations of female scientists and innovators.
