Abstract

Families are children’s most influential mathematics teachers so fostering ongoing dialogue about mathematics between primary caregivers and classroom teachers is an important consideration. However, in Initial Teacher Education programs, providing Pre-service Teachers with opportunities to practice such dialogue before entering the classroom is a difficult undertaking. The study presented in this paper adopted a narrative inquiry to interrogate the effectiveness of a pilot project that developed and drew on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) – powered ‘parent-caregiver’ chatbots to facilitate maths talk with ‘primary caregivers in an Initial Teacher Education program. A crucial component of determining the effectiveness of the GenAI-powered chatbots involved three teacher educators drawing on their own independent narrative inquiries to interrogate the effectiveness of the chatbots in facilitating maths talk as well as their lived experiences of incorporating the GenAI-powered technology into their pedagogical practice. In this paper, these inquiries are analysed together to identify key themes around the effectiveness of the chatbots in mathematics education in Initial Teacher Education and to identify barriers and opportunities for future work.
