Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) presents unprecedented opportunities to enhance Initial Teacher Education (ITE). As classrooms become increasingly technology-driven, it is essential to equip pre-service teachers with the knowledge and skills required to effectively integrate AI into their teaching practices. This chapter offers a synthesis of current literature coupled with our collective practice as teacher educators across primary and secondary ITE programs on how AI technologies are influencing teaching, learning and assessment practices in the sector. Through a selective literature review, we examine the emerging AI models and tools available to ITE programs. We identify tools that better support preservice teachers learning and feedback to improve their classroom readiness and identify challenges and issues implementing AI. The scope of AI to transform dimensions of ITE is explored and the potential long-term effects of AI technologies in ITE are discussed situating them within the broader landscape of AI in teacher education. This chapter utilises evidence informed synthesis of literature and practical insights. We conclude with a range of recommendations to guide ethical and equitable AI integration across ITE research, practice and policy.
