Abstract

Nathalie Heinich diagnoses a mutation in the history of art that came about with the advent of contemporary art. In her analysis of contemporary works, she designates inauthenticity as their essential trait. This fundamentally distinguishes them from modern works that aspire to authenticity. This inauthenticity is manifested in the artistic intention as a lack of seriousness, deception, insincerity, impersonality, an abandonment of interiority … and, in the relationship between the artist and the work, as a rupture of continuity in that relation. The diminution of the subject’s presence in the work occurs paradoxically because, behind it, an inviolable imperative persists: the work always remains the work of someone.
