Abstract

The distinction between rebellion and revolution is at the heart of Arendtâs theory of revolution. Arendt presents revolution as a distinctly modern phenomenon, which not only challenges whoever is the ruler, but strives to institute a novus ordo saeclorum. The grand world-building demands placed upon revolution, however, have the effect of demoting some nominally revolutionary events, especially allegedly ârestorativeâ ones such as Arab Spring or the 1989 revolutionary wave, to rebellions existing in a different league compared to the American, French or October Revolution. A phenomenological interpretation of the revolutionary experience itselfâtheoretically pioneered at earliest by Merleau-Pontyâcan fruitfully problematize such a hierarchy and base the theory of revolution more on the self-experience and self-understanding of revolutionary agents. Such an interpretation can offer a useful corrective to Arendtâs theory, while providing a proper grounding to her most valuable insights, such as the notions of rupture or spaces of freedom.
