Abstract

The study details the discourse on the possibilities of reforming Marxism in the context of the changes towards democratization in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. The text analyzes the concept of institutional revolution and individual revolt, which were a product of a critical reflection on Marxism and a reaction to the dehumanizing consequences of applying Marxism in politics. In the context of a critical re-assessment of utopian socialism as a program founded on the abstract humanism of the Leninist-Stalin version, a demand arose for the principle of institutional and moral renewal of society. The study details the limits in the provision of individual freedom through the intervention of elites and state institutions. It also thematizes the revolt of the individual as an expression of the desire for freedom in transforming societies, where the requirement of guaranteeing individual rights and freedoms has tended to be replaced in Europe by the imperative of socioeconomic security.
