Abstract

The aim of this chapter is an analysis of Camus’ political philosophy, focusing on the Defense of The Rebel, Camus’ last attempt at envisaging the tension between revolt and revolution. In our analysis, we will attempt to show how Camus understands revolt as a predominantly ethical, not only social phenomenon, creating a possibility of understanding the relationship between revolt and revolution as a relation between ethics and politics. Camus considers the tension between rebellion and revolution dialectically, adding that revolution is simultaneously a measure of rebellion. The concluding part of the chapter will be devoted to examining this statement and showing how it significantly changes the conception of revolt, embedding it in the context of a more metaphysical approach, related to philosophy of history. We will argue that the argument may be maintained in Camus’ thought only insofar as a specific understanding of human nature and human solidarity is considered.
