Abstract

Friedrich Nietzscheâs opposition to European Christianity received its finalâand most stridentâformulation in The Antichrist, which he prepared for publication just prior to his breakdown in December of 1888. A notable feature of The Antichrist, especially when compared to Nietzscheâs predecessor books, is Nietzscheâs apparent understanding that he need not concern himself with the formation and training of the readership he believed he deserved. Convinced that his likely readers had already embarked upon the cultivation of a distinctly secularâand even nobleâset of instincts, virtues, habits, and practices, Nietzsche conceived of The Antichrist as a timely incitement to rebellion. He thus assigned himself the task of liberating his likely readers from the false consciousness that had inured them to an (anachronistic) understanding of themselves as faithful Christians.
