Abstract

The complex link between the âEnlightenmentâ and âRevoltâ offers a rich vein of insights whether they come from historical, philosophical, sociological, or cultural perspectives. This study focuses on the presence of revolt in A History of the Two Indies, a pivotal work of the French Enlightenmentâs critique of European colonialism. The contributors to this work challenged the established authorities, arguing for a reevaluation of societal structures and framing their resistance as an intellectual revolt against outdated norms. The emphasis on universal human rights and self-determination strengthened the inclination to defy established norms. This analysis interprets arguments in the book that essentially gave birth to revolt by rejecting dogma and superstition. Despite sparking questions and rebellion against oppressive systems, the study concludes that the text never sought to seal its revolt with a revolution. The spirit of reform was transformed into the spirit of revolution, symbolized by the public burning of A History of the Two Indies in front of the French Parliament.
