Abstract

There an apparent for the development of quality assurance (QA) practitioners who can guarantee sustainable development by ensuring quality higher education (HE) within the African continent. QA competencies are essential for assuring the provision of quality higher education. The lack of sufficiently trained and competent quality professionals has led to the Southern African Society for Quality (SASQ) launching a scheme, Quality Professionals in Higher Education (QPHE), responsible for facilitating the professionalisation and accreditation of QA professionals in HE. The purpose of this chapter is to present processes undertaken by the QPHE team, in developing the criteria for QA practitioners towards attaining quality higher education and sustainable development in Africa. The literature, comprising historical development of QA was outlined, a conceptual framework was developed, and grounded on the Quality Assurance Framework, focusing on the knowledge, values, skills and attitude needed, to attain quality education. Ubuntu-Botho philosophy was employed. A qualitative methodology narration was presented, whilst analysis followed the structural presentation process, resulting into three themes emerging. Finally, the guidelines for professionalising QA in the education sector were framed. The scholarship of QA needs to be pursued vigorously for the maintenance of Africa’s competitive advantage, quality HE, and continuous development.
