Abstract

This chapter examines the transformative role of online learning platforms (OLP) in African higher education institutions (AHEIs) and their impacts on societal relevance and the knowledge-based economy in enhancing the pillars of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It examines the role of OLPs in transforming AHEIs, addressing challenges, opportunities, and future directions that shape the trajectory of AHEIs. It explores the evolving online platform in higher education (HE), emphasising the influence of technology on teaching and learning. It identifies avenues for innovation and engagement and analyses of the online learning of HEIs, including the adoption of digital technologies, integration of OLPs and tools, and the importance of enhancing accessibility and inclusivity through digitalisation. It also addresses the challenges of decolonisation, deracialisation, and degendering, emphasising the significance of fostering inclusive institutional cultures and diverse epistemologies, ontologies, and methodologies. The chapter evaluates the current state of AHEIs, identifies gaps and shortcomings, and proposes digital technologies for ubiquitous learning opportunities and quality improvement. It explores emerging trends in online learning, considering implications for educators, students, and institutions. It also delves into ethical considerations in the digital age. It recommends policymakers and stakeholders to embrace the OLPs for transformative changes in AHEIs.
