Abstract

Quality assurance (QA) mechanisms are important enablers for the achievement of the global Sustainable Development Goals, referred to as education for sustainable development (ESD). This chapter presents QA mechanisms practiced by HEIs in Tanzania. The purposive sampling techniques were used to select respondents (n = 40) comprising 20(50%) academic staff, 17(42.5%) students and 3(7.5%) administrative staff from Mzumbe University. A well-structured questionnaire was administered to collect primary data. Descriptive method of analysis was employed to explore QA mechanisms and factors hindering implementation of QA. Content analysis was also used to explore the link between quality education and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and stakeholder’s perspectives on QA mechanisms and processes in Tanzania. The results revealed that HEIs have various internal and external QA mechanisms despite the challenges of implementation. Besides, HEIs have a significant role in the promotion of SDGs due to the existing strong link between achievement of SDGs particularly goal Number 4, and quality education. Hence, this chapter recommends quality education improvement in the HEIs to ensure the creation of competent graduates and the achievement of the SDGs. Also, provides a piece of important information to the policy-making and planning institutions about areas that need intervention to further improve quality education in the country.
