Abstract

Higher education is under pressure globally due to the demand for equity, access, relevance and quality. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasise inclusive, equitable, quality and promotion of lifelong learning for all. In the SADC, higher education has been recognised as the engine behind social and economic development and an agent for human emancipation, making it a top priority on the agenda. SDG 4 commits every country to provide equal access to affordable and high-quality education, including higher education, by 2030. This means that education systems must be managed in ways that allow the SDGs to be met. Adopting a critical theory of education as an analytical lens, this chapter addresses the issue of challenges for equity, access, relevance, and quality in higher education in the SADC region. Equity and access to higher education have been achieved, but quality and relevance remain elusive due to challenges that threaten the overall success of the system. If these challenges are not addressed, they may render the equity, access, relevance and quality vision elusive, considering the role of higher education in society concerning SDG 4.
