Abstract

Higher education has been acknowledged as a catalyst for the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the world over. Using Policy Analysis as a theoretical framework, this chapter critically analysed contribution of African higher education to SDGs. The chapter argues that although HE is mentioned specifically under SDG4, its influence extends to all other seventeen goals, which can be achieved through research and innovation, and offering of academic programmes that are responsive to issues articulated in SDGs. However, in Africa, less progress has been achieved so far with regard to contribution to the attainment of the SDGs. Given less progress, African higher education institutions (HEIs) are called to swiftly embrace all 17 SDGs in their academic activities if they have to make meaningful contribution towards social and economic development of the continent. For the SDGs to be truly successful at a global scale, HEIs need to become champions of sustainable development and play a leading role in the implementation of the SDGs through quality learning and teaching, and cutting-edge research and innovation.
