Abstract

Mathematics, an abstract and challenging discipline, necessitates exploration of its latent and convoluted dimensions in teaching and learning. In the 21st Century, with rapid technological advancement, it is crucial for students to uncover the hidden meaning and grasp complex concepts in mathematics education, preparing them for a STEM-driven future. Educational neuroethics, influenced by neuroscience, emphasizes the importance of meaningful learning in mathematics. This chapter examines how task design can support meaningful mathematics learning, aligning with the principles of neuroethics. An action research approach is adopted, utilizing empirical data from the MATHS VIA project, which focuses on making mathematics meaningful. The project serves as a platform for implementing task design strategies. The findings highlight teachers’ professional growth through participation in the MATHS VIA project, as they engage in task design and promote meaningful mathematics learning. This chapter discusses the implications of the study’s findings for mathematics education and neuroethics. Task design emerges as a powerful means to support students in constructing meaning in mathematics. Integrating neuroethical considerations enhances teaching practices and empowers students in their mathematical learning journey. The chapter contributes insights into effective pedagogical strategies prioritizing the construction of meaning in students’ mathematical learning experiences.
