Overview

This chapter details my experiences as a writer, both individually as a creative writer, and professionally as a teacher. My experiences are examined through the lens of hope. In this chapter, through personal reflection, I express what I think is the best way to impart writing hope to students. I examine my experiences as a writer and compare them to my success as a teacher. This chapter is grounded in research that explores the role of writing in developing a student’s sense of self-worth. Offered within my chapter are reflections and ideas meant to inspire and offer guidance to other teachers who feel they are struggling to engage their students with written assignments. The specific instances shared here are from my time teaching during the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic. I highlight feedback strategies that I observed being effective during this trying time. Despite the circumstances, with sound pedagogy, I was a part of successfully engaging students in meaningful writing that instilled them with hope.
