Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic did a lot of things to our social, emotional wellbeing and our nation’s most potent systems. It exposed injustice in so many raw forms: police brutality, racism, ableism, anti-fatness and the need for a collective reassessment of our values as a culture. What I focused on as an educator was maintaining hope in my teaching and my students, and not losing the urgency of the moment to talk and teach about justice, freedom and equity in the texts we studied, the world in which we live, and the lives we (will) lead. This chapter explores how I did just that.
