Overview

Writing is a deeply personal and outwardly powerful tool. The teaching of writing, therefore, is a sacred task and how it is addressed can have profound effects in the direction of hope or despair for writing students. Feedback provided in response to students’ writing is a primary pathway used in the teaching of this skill, and this pathway in particular offers a considerable opportunity to find the sometimes subtle aspects of our students’ abilities that can be validated and responded to in such a way as to create an ever-expanding pattern of hope and proficiency. Positivity, authenticity, addressing students as writers and granting importance to the ideas they are expressing (not stressing form at the expense of content), are four qualities that can be incorporated into writing feedback that are conducive to engendering hope. Two stories illustrate how hope-filled writing feedback can result in hope-filled effects, and how much it might matter, even when the feedback or the results seem subtle or minor.
