Overview

This chapter examines research that shows that the idea of having hope is a contributing factor to student success and outcomes later in life. Inside my classroom, I work to instill an atmosphere of respect and hope through social emotional learning activities and hope-filled feedback, and this chapter details how I did so in uncertain times. Prior to the pandemic, secondary students at some of the most at-risk NYC high schools were entering school carrying childhood/adolescent trauma that without resolve would impact their ability to learn, and their outcomes later in life. These same students have spent a year of their high school career in inadequate housing, relying on barely functioning technology, in a city of racism-fueled riots, while experiencing the direct impact of sickness and death from Covid-19. These students are emerging from the pandemic disengaged, off-track for graduation, and feeling hopeless. As an educator, I am tasked with finding hope for myself so that I am able to help rebuild and reinforce hope for my students. During uncertain times, where each headline seems more bleak than the last, there is a thin line between toxic positivity, and true hope for what the future can and will hold. Therapeutic writing practices help me to find my own hope and make room for student voices so that I can find the traces of the hope that existed before and help students rebuild.
