Abstract

In South Africa, the subject Mathematical Literacy (ML) was introduced as a separate subject, different in scope and purpose from the core mathematics, and reserved for those learners who did not study core mathematics in their last three years of their schooling. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the ways in which four South African ML teachers respond to the demands of mediating the subject with their learners. Data for the study were generated by classroom observations and interviews with the teachers. The study found that the two specialist mathematics teachers tended to foreground the mathematics rather than using the context to make sense of the problems. This may be because of their own belief systems that prioritized mathematics. The two non-specialist teachers struggled with the mathematics and the contextual concepts on many levels, and showed an over-reliance on the textbook. The results suggest that both specialist and non-specialist mathematics teachers need professional development opportunities that would help them better understand the purpose of ML. Teachers also need guidance in issues such as the integration of the content and context in teaching ML.
