Abstract

One reason why mathematics is a compulsory educational subject globally is the fact that mathematical knowledge is applied in multiple and different areas outside mathematics. The PISA mathematics frameworks see mathematics as an essential tool for students beyond school as they face issues and challenges in the diverse contexts where mathematical knowledge is relevant. Despite many mathematics curricula around the globe recommending teachers use real-world contexts in teaching, data from PISA show consistently that a high percentage of students do not reach the minimum standard of mathematical literacy that enables them to deal with real-world contexts. This finding relates to a long-standing issue of the educational research on mathematical modelling to investigate how problem context influences studentś performance. In this vein, this chapter (i) offers a definition of the context of a mathematics problem, (ii) presents a concise classification of the “level of context use” required to solve a mathematical problem, (iii) briefly reports the results of a study that shows that a higher level of context use makes problems more difficult and also gives some insight into why this happens, and (iv) discusses issues of problem development that face teachers and others when they wish to assist students to work more effectively with problems in context.
