Abstract

In this chapter, we share research insights generated through our work with Australian secondary school teachers as part of the Economics + Maths = Financial Capability project. As part of this educational design research project, a course for teachers of Year 7–10 humanities and mathematics (secondary school students, 12–16 years of age) was designed and tested. The course aimed to strengthen teachers’ interdisciplinary knowledge of finance-related curriculum and content, as well as their awareness of contemporary financial contexts, so as to enhance their ability to develop young people’s financial capability. While the teachers we worked with tended to lack confidence in their mathematical knowledge and skills to address numeracy learning outcomes across the curriculum, they were keen to develop their understanding of contemporary financial contexts, as they recognised these as effective levers to explore mathematics with students in their classes. Our analysis shows that the course helped teachers to see the interconnected nature of economic and mathematical knowledge as it is drawn upon and applied in the real world, and opened new and powerful possibilities for their practice.
