Abstract

The chapter “Zones of Proximal Comfort” explores how graphic scores, and free improvisation activities can be used as a form of arts-based research to change perspectives among participants. By grounding an abstract experience like free improvisation in graphic scores, a group of high school students in suburban New York demonstrated a greater willingness to explore their creativity. Dialoguing with one another is honored as an important part of embracing openness to difference and freedom of thought and representation of self. In addition, the author explores how his own identity evolved through this project.
