Abstract

This chapter describes the author’s first foray into arts-based research and how the experience shaped her approach to her dissertation study as well as provided new insights into her understanding of herself as a thinker, a creator, an educator, and a human being. The author used various mapping techniques as a bridge between research and art and a vehicle for self-study in the context of Whiteness and gentrification in New York City. While the artmaking process described in the chapter was groundwork for a study specifically relating to parental involvement in public schools and collaborative leadership across socially constructed lines of difference in public school communities, it transcends that context. It is also the story of an educator discovering a range of tools and experiences she can use with her students as well as herself. In describing the process by which one middle-aged graduate student who was never formally trained as either a teacher or an artist harnessed her creative impulses for the good of her scholarship and teaching and eventually came to accept the identity of scholar-artist, it illuminates possibilities for more engaged, embodied, and liberated knowledge creation for people of all ages and in all educational contexts.
