Abstract

My autoethnographic approach is part of my overall multidisciplinary interests around alternative practices that examine social issues and Black diasporic experiences through images, paper art, street art, storytelling through images, and the usage of archives. Through these visual practices, I began working through the tensions that exist between my identities as a community member, artist, and scholar. My lived experiences made me want to further explore the reimagining and rethinking of concepts of knowledge that extend beyond school settings. Acknowledging everyday practitioners and knowledge producers that exist outside of academia can allow us to reimagine and, in my case, develop counter narratives that go against white, Euro-centric ways of capturing history that leaves out narratives from Black and Brown faces.
