Abstract

The subject of the current study is to consider the potential of study visits in supporting students’ agency in terms of involvement in local processes for social cohesion. The analysis relates to the study visit organized at the University of Zielona Góra in cooperation with Alivio Social Cooperative, providing respite services (Poland). The study has been carried out using the case study method with in-depth interviews, participant observation and analysis of study visit results. The theoretical framework has been developed around three major explicatory perspectives: local cohesion, inclusive education, and individual agency. This study contributes to the discussion of local cohesion by revealing the role of active education techniques in building the agency of their participants. The results suggest that study visits are teaching techniques enabling the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and experiences essential for improving the place of origin.
