Abstract

Reflection is core skill in caring professions such as Psychology, Speech language and hearing (SLH) and social work practice, among others. Reflection in and on teaching and learning is a process that foregrounds critical thinking, increased self-awareness, and the development of new and intelligent understandings. As a result, educators strive to inculcate skills of reflection and reflexivity in students as they prepare them for making connections with the world, collaboration, and development of their professional identity. Designing courses that incorporate the use of reflection is useful in the teaching of specifically group work, as students collaborate in groups and reflect on their own actions and the actions of the members as well as the dynamics in the group. To understand how students, understand and deal with reflection and reflexivity a qualitative case study of a social work group work course was undertaken. The data collected from the study included twelve group essays and a focus group discussion, which was later transcribed. Data were thematically analysed. From the analysis the chapter found that reflection is an important skill in group work. Thus, the chapter argues that incorporation of activities that promote reflection, is beneficial in the teaching of group work, as group dynamics are easily unpacked by students, and facilitates the students’ ability to correct their actions and be more accepting of other team members, a critical skill for the practice of social work.
