Abstract

In 2015, South African higher education students, through what is popularly known as “fallist movements”, reminded us of the unresolved issues in higher education when they demanded, amongst other things, a decolonised curriculum. In essence, the students were demanding an education that offers a means of gaining knowledge about themselves. This demand resonated with the decolonial initiative that the University of South Africa (Unisa) has engaged with since 2012. Consequently, Unisa endorsed curriculum transformation as one of its strategic visions. In 2017, the Unisa Council, which is the key decision-making body at the university, made this resolution mandatory. The Department of Leadership and Transformation was subsequently given the task of driving curriculum transformation. Against this backdrop, anthropology as a discipline had to respond to the university resolution, especially because the subject is entrenched in its colonial past. Using the foundation laid by the university, the module that is the subject of this case study brings African knowledges to the fore. It brings African epistemologies and pedagogies to create an African-centred module that will produce responsible and responsive citizens who are able to respond to modern-day challenges. This chapter addresses three issues: the transformational trajectory at Unisa, challenges in the subject of anthropology, and curriculum transformation.
