Abstract

The chapter provides a description of the development process as well as an overall insight of a program developed to study Social Work in a truly new and unmet way. In 2019 “Freiform” as a radically new and innovative form to study Social Work at Bachelor level was launched at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, School of Social Work. The aim of this new form of study was to create a structurally and relationally closer link between the fields of practice, education and research. “Freiform” combines areas of learning environment, study programs and higher education organization. This combination creates the basis for sustainable and future-ready development of organization and curricula as well as building up individual competences of all members of the community. They carry the shared responsibility to mutually design innovative educational spaces at both organizational and curricular level. On the organizational level the concept of sociocracy serves as the theoretical framework. This is intended to facilitate a participatory, collaborative, goal-oriented organization that is aligned with the learning content of the bachelor’s program. At the curricular level, the competencies and knowledge required for the Bachelor’s degree are not taught in conventional modules. Instead, students direct their own thematic exploration accompanied by experts from university and practice. The profile that defines the set general competencies basic knowledge on Bachelor level serves as an overarching guideline.
