Abstract

The psychodynamic approach has been the major therapeutic procedure since the inception of professional Psychology in South Africa. The teaching of Counselling and Psychotherapy in the Psychology profession programme followed this approach for over decades. Since democracy in South Africa, the population has changed significantly with people from the various racial groups, including multinational people from other African states and the world at large accessing psychotherapeutic services. The counselling and psychotherapy intervention from the psychodynamic approach focuses on the client’s biophysiological symptoms, family background and their utterances in the therapeutic space (playroom for young children) as tools for analysis of their psycho-social challenges and underlying psychopathology. The current cohort of students is introduced to the Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) to fulfil the endeavour of integrating it as a psychotherapeutic analytical tool with the next cohort of students as the curriculum transformation activity. In this chapter a case study from one of the students’ therapy cases provides the author’s initial reflections on the application of CHAT analysis of the activity systems embedded in the psychotherapy case and intervention procedure.
